Diani Beach is a major beach on the Indian Ocean coast of Kenya (in eastern Africa). It is located 30 kilometers (19 mi) south of Mombasa, in Kwale County.
It has been voted Africa’s leading beach destination for the fifth time running since 2015
Why move from Nairobi to Diani
Diani is famous for the following:
- Sandy and soft beaches e.g. Diani Beach.
- Exotic cuisine
- Rich Swahili culture
- A popular holiday destination for world-famous celebrities
Social activities in Diani

The best things to do in Diani typically involve hitting the beach or exploring the area’s beautiful natural environment. This beach resort town along the south coast of Kenya is an incredible destination with so many exciting things to do and see.
Diani is home to luxurious resorts, beach villas, white sands, and other attractions popular with families, backpackers, honeymooners, and solo travelers.
If you love strolling along sandy beaches, swimming with dolphins, or taking nature walks, you’ll find many wonderful things to see in Diani. It’s also located close to small islands and coral gardens, making it a haven for water sports lovers.
Best Things to Do in Diani
There are a lot more than the following 15 things to do in Diani. They’re based on accessibility, cost, level of fun, and adventure.
1. Explore the Magnificent Beaches

Exploring the several beaches in Diani is one of the nicest things to do. The small coastal town is home to several lovely beaches and posh resorts. The beaches are perfect for strolling along, sunbathing, unwinding, and enjoying scrumptious meals and refreshing drinks.
Galu Kinondo is the best beach in Diani for watersports and relaxation, while Tiwi is perfect for an off-beat day out. If you love white sands and blue waters, head to the magnificent Diani Beach.

To add to the beach fun, several restaurants in Diani offer a wonderful dining experience. My favorites include the Nomad Beach Bar for seafood and the romantic Ali Barbour’s Cave.
2. Discover the Local Lifestyle with a Local
Join this engaging walking tour of Ukunda town to get a glimpse of local life in Diani. You’ll chat with locals, see markets, and sample cuisine while on the guided trip. It’s undoubtedly among the most culturally enlightening things to do in Diani.
3. Go on a Sunset Canoe Ride on the Kongo River
Diani Beach and Tiwi Beach are separated from one another by the Kongo River, which flows between mangroves and empties into the Indian Ocean. Birdwatchers, wildlife enthusiasts, and people looking to catch a sunset will all enjoy this magnificent river.
It is wide upstream but narrows as it approaches the coast, making it simple for visitors to reach the two beaches.

The best way to explore the Kongo River is by joining this guided experience. The tour starts with a visit to the historic Kongo Mosque. You’ll then ride in a canoe, spotting various birds, learning about the area, and watching the sunset.
4. Swim in the Africa Pool along Tiwi Beach
Tiwi Beach may not be as famous as Diani Beach, but it’s just as beautiful and hosts one of the hidden gems in Diani – Africa Pool. This magical pool resembles the map of Africa and its surrounding islands. It’s visible during low tide and is a nice swimming spot.
While it’s possible to walk along Tiwi Beach to the Africa Pool, I highly recommend being accompanied by a local guide. During the walk, you’ll see coral cliffs, caves, and seashells, and spot other pools along the way.
5. Sail on a Traditional Dhow to Wasini Island
Visit the Kisite Mpunguti Marine National Park, where dolphins, turtles, fish species, and stunning coral gardens thrive, was one of the highlights of my trip to Diani.
Only boats are permitted to travel to the marine park, which is situated offshore. Its mild waters are perfect for swimming and snorkeling.
Joining this guided tour is the best way to explore this amazing Diani site. A dhow (boat) ride will take you from Shimoni town to Kisite Mpunguti, where you may go snorkeling and see dolphins.
You’ll next have lunch and drinks in the Wasini Island settlement before going back to Shimoni.
6. Go Scuba Diving (One of the Best Things to do in Diani)
Visit Diani if you’re seeking places to go scuba diving in Kenya. Divers of all skill levels, from beginners to experts, are welcome at the beach town. Additionally, the area has a great climate that makes diving possible all year long.
Diani’s beauty extends beyond what is visible on the surface and into the vast underworld as well. It has several dive locations where you can see uncommon fish species in schools and beautiful corals. Sites like the Waa Wreck and Galu Reef, which were intentionally sunk ships, are among these.
Infrastructure in Diani
The government has recently made considerable expenditures on Diani’s infrastructure. Along with the always busy Ukunda airfield, the area boasts a good road, sea, and air transit system.
The Likoni Ferry is currently the only way to get to Diani from Mombasa. However, the eagerly awaited Dongo Kundu bypass, which will enable visitors to completely avoid the Likoni ferry, is expected to be finished in 2023.
